Kyoto

A historical and cultural city in western Japan. As the former capital city, it is known for its many temples, shrines, gardens, and traditional wooden buildings. It is also home to a number of art universities, and many of the artists who studied at these have set up workshops and alternative spaces after graduation, energetically developing their creative activities.

The largest port city in western Japan. Its dialects, public performances, and other aspects of its unique folk culture have had a profound impact on contemporary art. Many historical buildings from the Showa period survive here, and these have been re-purposed as art spaces.
