Shiro Takatani
Born in 1963. While studying at Kyoto City University of Arts, in 1984 Takatani joined in activities by the artist collective Dumb Type. He became involved in performance art and installations using myriad media and held shows and exhibitions at theaters, art museums, art centers, and other venues around the world.
In 1998, he began creating works on his own, alongside his projects with Dumb Type.
He created stage designs”La chambre claire“(co-produced by Theater der Welt 2008/Germany),”CHROMA“(The first performance is held 2012 in Biwako Hall/Japan-Shiga),”ST/LL“(The first performance is held 2015 in Le Volcan – Scène Nationale du Havre/France).
As well as performances at the Marseilles Festival and exhibitions at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media[YCAM], the ZKM Center for Arts and Media in Germany, the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris, and elsewhere, Takatani’s many works include collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Mansai Nomura, Kichizaemon Raku, and others.
In June 2021, the new piece by Takatani and Ryuichi Sakamoto, TIME, was performed for the first time anywhere in the world at the Holland Festival. In 2022, Dumb Type is scheduled to represent Japan in the Japan Pavillion at the international art exhibition La Biennale di Venezia.
