Liu Chuang’s works, which span video, sculpture, installation, and performance, reflect a rapidly changing contemporary China. In his recent video output, interspersed with fieldwork surveys of the world’s peripheral regions and urban infrastructure, Liu’s sci-fi imagination offers a prescient vision of the future course of the unique traditions and culture of the region in question. These images demonstrate how there is still a diversity of cultural richness to be found, even as the global economy, which runs in lockstep with the acquisition of energy sources and the accumulation of information, is making the world standardized and homogeneous.
