Kyoto

A historical and cultural city in western Japan. As the former capital city, it is known for its many temples, shrines, gardens, and traditional wooden buildings. It is also home to a number of art universities, and many of the artists who studied at these have set up workshops and alternative spaces after graduation, energetically developing their creative activities.

Osaka

The largest port city in western Japan. Its dialects, public performances, and other aspects of its unique folk culture have had a profound impact on contemporary art. Many historical buildings from the Showa period survive here, and these have been re-purposed as art spaces. In addition to the The National Museum of Art, the Nakanoshima area is being developed as a hub for culture, the arts, and learning, and is expected to flourish as a contemporary cultural district in the future.

Taipei

The capital of Taiwan. With the support of the city government, various cultural policy initiatives are underway, such as art festivals, art fairs, and artists-in-residence. In the private sector, meanwhile, many galleries can be found with huge spaces like those found in museums, while efforts are being made toward freer expression and the discovery of new talent.
