we live in my mind

From past to present and on into the future, amid the ongoing rhythms of human activity Zuiun-an remains a living space, its beauty manifesting in constant change, its air that of a work of art crafted by people and nature.

This exhibition at Zuiun-an, as lovely and vital a setting as ever, presents a selection of works that find meaning in materials and the journey of those materials through human hands, yet also offer pure delight.  A little on the creators of these works.

Yuki Tsukiyama employs a wide range of materials including wood, metal and paint, on each occasion embarking on a dialog with those materials to produce art that teaches us there are interesting discoveries to be made merely by looking at things around us in a slightly different way.

Kazuya Kitaura crafts humorous woodcarvings with a subtly nihilist bent. The warmth of wood is an indispensable element of theses sculptures that appeal to the child in us all, while myriad motifs combined in totem-pole fashion are as much part of the artist’s toolbox as the wood.

Daisei Suzuki dyes thread himself and uses the tsuzure-ori tapestry weaving technique in two-dimensional creations whose beauty lies in the meticulous handiwork in every strand. Composed of the cumulative traces of this crafting, his works exude a palpable sense of the time and memories of their making.

Nana Morimoto makes ceramic art focused on particular parts of animal bodies, often hindquarters or legs. A technique that spans two domains: that of controlled fashioning by the hands, and that of being forced to entrust the result to nature once in the kiln, leads to some stunning works.

The evolving practice of video artist Daiki Tsuji includes installations that emphasize an analog over a digital approach, and search for ways to transform the material of filmic image through human capabilities. Look for what is shared by the processes involved in the making of these artists’ works, and the process by which Zuiun-an has become what it is today, and immerse yourself through artworks and spaces in delights created by nature and humans, and the future that lies beyond.
