Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art 50th Anniversary – PROJECT UMINOUE Yasuaki IGARASHI“Umikaze”

A two-month voyage by artist, locals and visitors

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art presents “Umikaze,”a strolling exhibition by Chiba artist Igarashi Yasuaki.

In art projects across Japan and the world, Igarashi works alongside local residents to connect the lifestyle and natural environment of their home in beautiful ways, in the process remaking the landscape. The Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art is located in the attractive portside precinct of Chibaminato, overlooking Tokyo Bay. In addition to an exhibition in the
museum itself, consisting of new installations that make stunning use of the site’s architectural spaces, a collaborative exhibit including works from the permanent collection, and an archival exhibit documenting Igarashi’s projects, works are displayed outdoors around Chibaminato, highlighting the area’s appeal, and bringing new creative riches to
land reclaimed from the sea. “Umikaze” is also a participatory art project, crafted by a core “Umikaze Crew” of supporting volunteers assisted by local residents, pupils from a nearby school, and members of the public, and completed with the help of visitors. Come join them, and feel the “umikaze” (sea breeze) blowing over this place that was once water.
