Yoshio Kitayama
Yoshio Kitayama was born in Shiga Prefecture in 1948. He began creating works while pursuing dyeing and weaving in Kyoto. In 1979, his work was selected for the 14th Contemporary Art Exhibition of Japan. He held a solo exhibition at Utsubo Gallery in the same year. His works evolved from drawings using familiar materials to relief-like works using paper and bamboo, garnering attention from those in the art world. He was selected as one of the artists to exhibit at the Japan Pavilion of the 1982 Venice Biennale. Throughout the 1980s, his 3D works, which used bamboo, paper, leather, and the like, were highly praised. He also worked on large-scale commission work; however, from the 1990s onward, he shifted his focus to producing and releasing paintings. In 2021, he held his first new solo exhibition of 3D drawings in around 30 years at Gallery 16. He exhibited works at “Art Now” in 1984, 1985 (special display), and 1990 (Kansai Contemporary Art of the 1980s). In addition to participating in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and the Setouchi Triennale, he has exhibited in numerous exhibitions at art museums in Japan and overseas up until now.
