Umeda Tetsuya
Born 1980 in Kumamoto Prefecture, currently based in Osaka. Crafting installations from locally sourced items, and everyday materials, and adding the motive power of physical phenomena, Umeda also undertakes performances, to date including a tour inviting spectators to unfamiliar places, a work for theater focusing on the features of the theater as a physical space, and a project involving a choir without a center. He is also known as a cutting-edge sound artist. In 2023 he staged the exhibition wait this is my favorite part at WATARI-UM, The Watari Museum of Contemporary Art; in the same year winning the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists, and a Tokyo Contemporary Art Award.
