TONOSHIKI Tadashi
1942-1992, born in Hiroshima. Two days after the atomic bombing, Tonoshiki and his mother, who had evacuated, arrived in the city to search for his father, who had been working near the hypocenter. There they were exposed to post-blast radiation. After graduating from high school, he worked for the Japanese National Railways, but at the age of 26 he left his job to pursue painting in earnest. Tonoshiki gained recognition for his detailed pointillist renderings of belongings his parents had lost in the bombing, other items related to the atomic bomb, and everyday objects. He subsequently expanded his practice to include silkscreen prints and installations incorporating discarded objects and washed-up debris, gaining recognition both in Japan and abroad for works exploring the contradictions of contemporary society.
