Shintaro Tanaka

Born in Tokyo in 1940, Tanaka was evacuated to Hitachi toward the end of the Pacific War, remaining there through high school. Returning to Tokyo, he became part of the avant-garde art scene under the influence of Neo-Dada and Anti-Art before pivoting to a Minimalist-adjacent aesthetic in the late 1960s and going on to participate in major international exhibitions including Between Man and Matter in 1970, and the Venice Biennale in 1972. From 1985 onward, he presented works that combined two- and three-dimensional elements, continuing until his death in 2019 to pursue a practice rooted in his own distinctive artistic vision.
