Tanaka Atsuko

1932|Osaka – 2005|Nara
Born in Osaka City. She entered Kyoto City University of Fine Arts (now Kyoto City University of Arts) in 1951 but left the same year to attend the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts Art Research Institute. There she met Kanayama Akira, who introduced her to the research group Zero Society, and joined the Gutai Art Association along with other members of that group in 1955. Her paintings, which developed from Electric Dress (1956)—a work made of light bulbs and electric cords—received high praise from Michel Tapié and led to her participation in numerous exhibitions in Europe and the U.S. In 1965, she and Kanayama withdrew from Gutai together and later married. From the 1970s onward, she was based in Asuka, Nara.
