Sumaco Yasui

Sumaco Yasui was born in Osaka-fu in 1959 and studied copperplate engraving at Osaka University of Arts. After exhibiting at the Contemporary Print Contest (Osaka Contemporary Art Center), she held her first solo exhibition at the Hiramatsu Gallery (Osaka) in 1984. In 1987, she participated in “Yes Art/Deluxe” (Sagacho Exhibit Space, Tokyo/Gallery Haku), and held a solo exhibition of tableaus in the same year. From 1996 up until the present, in addition to holding solo exhibitions every year at GALERIE petitbois, she has exhibited her work nationwide, including in Tokyo. Using delicate etched lines and hand-colored pastels, she has continued to depict a world in which people and flowers exist equally, transcending attributes such as gender and age. She has also produced numerous book cover designs for novelists including Ryu Murakami. In recent years, she worked on the first woodblock prints for covers of all 100 volumes of the “Hyakunen Bunko” series (Poplar Publishing Co., 2010 to 2011). In addition, she has published illustrated poetry anthologies (including “Hire no Konseki [Traces of Fins]” in 1993) and picture books themed around her own childhood. She also took up a teaching position at her alma mater, Osaka University of Arts.
