Shiro Matsui

Shiro Matsui was born in Nara Prefecture in 1960 and completed graduate school at Kyoto City University of Arts. He exhibited his work in group exhibitions while attending university, holding his first solo exhibition at Gallery Suzuki (Kyoto) in 1983, followed by another at Muramatsu Gallery in Tokyo in 1987. He also exhibited work at “Art Now” in 1985 and 1990 (Kansai Contemporary Artists of the 1980s). Matsui used various materials such as earth, bronze, and silicon rubber to produce works of a composition which allowed the viewer to experience coming and going between “inside and outside”. Following “Japanese Art in the 80s”, which traveled around Germany and Austria in 1990, he presented many works in Europe, mainly in Germany. In 2001, he presented his work at Hyokeikan (“Reading the Art Museum”). He held solo exhibitions at Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in 2011 and Miyanomori International Museum of Art, Sapporo in 2016. In 2018, he presented the “Art Museum Garden Art Project: The Sense of Wonder of Shiro Matsui” (Himeji City Museum of Art, Hyogo). He is involved in many projects both in Japan and abroad, including collaborative research with NASDA, the National Space Development of Japan (current JAXA).
