Shima Yuzo

Born in 1934 in Kizukuri (now Tsugaru), Aomori. Year of death unknown. Shima graduated from Kizukuri High School in 1952, and studied at Nihon University Faculty of Economics (Distance Learning Division). After graduating from high school, he took up a teaching position at Shariki Tomioka Junior High School, subsequently working at Tomipa Elementary School, and Fukaura Chokeidaira, Odose, and Kizukuri Tateoka junior high schools. He was engaged in the teachers’ union movement from 1967 to 1989. He is the author of the books Migrant Work and Education: The Children and Teachers Living There (Minshusha, 1974) and From the Beech Forests of the Shirakami Mountains (Kokudosha, 1994), among others; and editor of Blizzard and Roaring Sea: A History of Practical Life-Writing and Composition Education in Aomori Prefecture (Nishi-Tsugaru Democratic Education Research Association, 1979). His major papers include “The Foundations of the Emergence of the Education Labor Movement in Aomori Prefecture and the Development of the Movement” published in History of the Education Labor Movement (edited by the Labor Movement History Research Association, Rodo Junposha, 1970).
