Saijo Akane

Saijo Akane (b. 1989, Hyogo, Japan) Lives and works in Kyoto. She completed her Master’s degree in Ceramics at the Graduate School of Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts in 2014. She studied abroad at the Royal College of Art in London in 2013. She was admitted to the FY2020 Kyoto City Special Bounty Program for Art and Culture. The keyword of Saijo’s work is “corporeal presence,” inspired by the characteristics of ceramics, namely, their smooth exteriors and hollow interiors. She creates ceramic works and presents sound performances by breathing and voicing into their hollow spaces. Saijo also visits kilns around the world, producing works based on local legends and histories.

Major exhibitions include #WhereDoWeStand?—Art in Our Time at The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto (2025–26); Aichi Triennale 2025 at Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum (2025); the commemorative solo exhibition Double Touch at Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (2025); Ishikawa Yukie and Saijo Akane at BLUM Tokyo (2024); Our Ecology: Toward a Planetary Living at Mori Art Museum (2023); the solo exhibition Phantom Body at Artcourt Gallery (2022); and Transboundary Craft at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2019).
