Ozu Yasujiro

Yasujiro Ozu (1903 – 1963) is a Japanese film director and screenwriter. He is one of the most representative directors of Japanese cinema, and in his career spanning 35 years from the silent film era to the postwar period, he directed 54 films, including Late Spring (1949) starring Setsuko Hara and Tokyo Story (1953). He is known for his unique visual world, known as the “Ozu style,” characterized by low-angle shooting and strict composition, and for his continued works that deal with themes such as parent-child relationships and the disintegration of the family. In 1962, he was the first filmmaker to be elected as a member of the Japan Art Academy.
