Naoki Ishikawa

The photographer Naoki Ishikawa was born in Tokyo in 1977. He received his Ph.D. in art from Tokyo University of the Arts. He won the Newcomer’s Award from the Photographic Society of Japan and the Kodansha Publication Culture Award for Photography for NEW DIMENSION (AKAAKA Art Publishing) and POLAR (Little More), and the Domon Ken Award for CORONA (Seidosha). His numerous published books include The Last Adventurer (Shueisha), for which he received the Kaiko Takeshi Nonfiction Award. Recent publications include the long-form essay Into the Far North (Mainichi Shimbun Publishing); Ama Dablam (SLANT), the sixth (following five eight-thousanders) in a photo book series of Himalayan peaks; and the NIPPON series (SUPER LABO×BEAMS), a 47-volume photo book project, in which each volume is named for a Japanese prefecture. His large-scale solo exhibition, “Mapping the Map of the Light of This Star,” which began at Art Tower Mito in 2016, has traveled to Niigata City Art Museum, Ichihara Lakeside Museum, Kochi Prefectural Museum of Art, Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art, Hatsudai Opera City, and other venues. A book of the same name was also published, and in 2020 he will publish “The Highest Mountain in Alaska “(Fukuinkan Shoten) and “Climbing Mount Fuji” (Arisukan), and is also working on a series of photo picture books.
