Mio SHIRAI

Mio SHIRAI was born in 1962. After studying at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts, she began actively exhibiting large-scale installations from the late 1980s, for which she attracted significant attention. In 1993, she moved to New York after receiving a grant from the Asian Cultural Council (ACC), where she remained based until 2006. Upon her arrival back in Japan, she returned to western Tokyo, where she was accustomed to living, and began producing videos, paintings, three-dimensional works, and more. In 1994, she installed the public art pieces “Round Trip” and “Cut” at Faret Tachikawa. In addition to her solo exhibitions, she also participated in “Artist File 2008”, (The National Art Center, Tokyo, 2008), the “Setouchi Triennale” (Uno Port, Okayama, 2013), the “Aichi Triennale” (Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Aichi, 2013), and more. She currently works as a professor at Tokyo Zokei University.
