Michiko Nakatani

Born in 1981 in Tokyo. Completed the Meisterschüler Course at Dresden Academy of Fine Arts.

Creates sculptures that are the opposite of relief sculptures and can be called counter-relief while focusing on how to make the image materialize genuinely. Forms images that blend imaginations and daily life out of clay and makes molds using plaster. The clay model is removed, and transparent resin is poured into the empty mold. Continually questions the non-existence and existence of objects. In 2014, moved into the vacated home in Mie Prefecture that his grandfather used to live in and carries out a project in Omuro Private Museum, the factory that he renovated, to exclusively exhibit works on Respect for the Aged day every year.

Main exhibitions include Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial: Earth’s Art Festival (Niigata; 2018), DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow (National Art Center; Tokyo; 2018), and the private exhibition Person Standing in This Small Space (Mie Prefectural Art Museum Yoshitatsu Yanagihara Gallery (2019).
