Matsui Shota

Born 1994 and based in Kyoto, Japan. He graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts in 2018 with a major in sculpture. Interested in the natural beauty and weight of stone, he mainly creates three-dimensional works that incorporate unprocessed stone as it is in his artwork. Recently, he has been developing wall-hanging works to promote the appreciation of stone indoors. He is conscious of how the stones in his works reflect the traditional and formal suiseki, and he uses modern materials (resin, glass, etc.) to appreciate the stones from a new angle. As the weight of the stone increases, it becomes more difficult to support, and the difficulty of making the work increases.

Major exhibitions include the solo show “Chu wo yuku.” (haku kyoto, Kyoto, 2022) “Macguffin – Changing Image -“ (Gallery TOH, Tokyo, 2021) Group exhibition “Wilhelmy Plate” (MEDIASHOP, Kyoto, 2020) “ATAMI ART GRANT” (Yakuzen Cafe gekiyaku, Atami, 2021)
