Fukushima Hideko

1927|Tokyo – 1997|Tokyo
Born in Akasaka Ward, Tokyo City (now Akasaka, Minato Ward, Tokyo). Fukushima entered Bunka Gakuin in 1939 and graduated in 1943 upon the school’s temporary closure. In 1948, she participated in the Modern Art Summer Course held at Bunka Gakuin, where she built connections with critics and artists of her generation. In 1951, she became a founding member of Jikken Kōbō. Her practice centered around painting, stage design, and costume design. From around 1955, she developed a distinctive painting style that involved stamping objects coated with ink onto support. From the late 1950s onward, she worked internationally, and from the 1960s began to create paintings that incorporated new materials such as glass fiber and paraffin wax.
