Cinema 58
Cinema 57 was an experimental film group active from 1957 to 1959, changing its name to Cinema 58 and Cinema 59 over the years. The group consisted of nine members: Susumu Hani, Yoshiro Kawazu, Kyushiro Kusakabe, Sadamu Maruo, Zenzo Matsuyama, Kanzaburo Mushanokoji, Masahiro Ogi, Ryuichiro Sakisaka and Hiroshi Teshigahara. Their main activities included publishing the newsletter Cinema and holding film screening workshops, as well as producing the short film Tokyo 1958. The film adopted a unique method in which all members discussed and collaborated on the script, direction, editing, and other aspects of the work, and was entered in the World Experimental Film Competition held in Brussels. The film attempted to depict the theme of “Tokyo’s chaos and old Japan” through fragments of everyday life, quoting ukiyo-e art.
