CHO Deok-hyeon

1957- ; born in Gangwon Province, South Korea. Born in Gangwon-do, South Korea, Cho studied painting at Seoul National University and has continued to create works centered on the theme of memory through detailed paintings based on personal old photographs, as well as installations that combine these with wooden frames, boxes, and everyday objects. This work was created in response to a commission on the theme of “Hiroshima,” using photographs of atomic bomb victims. The portrait inside the box is intermittently illuminated by flashing lights, while the box, positioned to face it, is said to have once been used as an ammunition container. It now contains a canvas stained with blood.
