Chie Matsui

Chie Matsui was born in Osaka-fu in 1960 and completed the master’s degree course at Kyoto City University of Arts in 1984. While attending university, she presented her works in solo and group exhibitions in Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe. From around 1983, she began arranging various materials, such as plaster, sand, tree branches, fur, and photographs to create installations filled with allegorical images. She participated in “Art Now” in 1984 and 1990 (Kansai Contemporary Art of the 1980s). From the late 1980s to the 1990s, her works developed into large-scale installations that temporarily constructed spaces themselves, such as walls and corridors. From 2000, she shifted her focus to video works, releasing the “Heidi” series and more. In recent years, she has been focusing on creating drawings and paintings, which she has consistently worked on since her early days. She has participated in multiple exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, including the Venice Biennale Aperto section in 1990, “Art in Japan Today: 1985 to 1995”(Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo) in 1995, “Projects 57: Bull Lee/Chie Matsui”(The Museum of Modern Art) in 1997, the Yokohama Triennale in 2005 and 2014, and more.
