
Araki Yu
Born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1985. He received a BFA in Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis and an MA in Film and New Media Studies from Tokyo University of the Arts. After failing to work as a Japanese-English interpreter, he began creating works that focus on mistranslations. Recent major exhibitions and screenings include SCARTS (Sapporo, 2025), Bangkok Experimental Film Festival (2025), CAM Gulbenkian (Lisbon, 2024), Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (2024), Towada Art Center (2023), C-LAB (Taipei, 2023), London ICA (2021), FID Marseille (2021), Pola Museum of Art (Hakone, 2020), Shiseido Gallery (Tokyo, 2019), International Film Festival Rotterdam (2018, 2020), Artsonje Center (Seoul, 2019), etc. In 2017, he was a guest resident at the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, and in 2018 at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. In 2019 he was a finalist for the Future Generation Art Prize, and in 2023 he received the Special Prize in the Commission Project at the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions. In 2024 he was awarded a Pola Art Foundation fellowship for overseas research in Lisbon, Portugal.
