Akio Nakatani
Akio Nakatani was born in Osaka-fu in 1953 and graduated from Osaka University of Arts. He began to produce paintings from the 1970s, exhibiting at the Kyoto Independent Exhibition from 1975 to 1979. After a solo exhibition at Gallery 16 in 1976, he held numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries centering around the Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe region. He also exhibited his work in Nagoya, Tokyo, Yokohama, and more. At “Art Now ’82”, he exhibited work having structure wherein a canvas was folded up from the allocated exhibition space and protruded vertically from the walls. This work took a unique approach which questioned the forms of supports and surfaces, and planes and solids. Following this, he continued to consistently explore painting as his work shifted from linear drawings in bright colors to planes of colored surfaces composed of horizontal and vertical grids.
